Does anyone have 1885 Army List to hand?

I'm trying to establish which battalion of The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) Thomas Frederick Kynnersley Gardner was assigned/attached to in 1885, and whether he was a regular soldier or a militiaman?

Everything appears to point to the 2nd Battalion, formerly the 76th Regiment of Foot, with regard to collar insignia, but this appears to have been shared by its Militia Battalion.

Kynnersley Gardner served in Lonsdale's Horse in 1879, and Maori Browne dedicates his Camp Yarns of the Lost Legion to him.

The Keysham Light Horse have a memorial plaque to him in Leighton Parish Church on http://www.1879memorials.com/colforces/tfkgrdnr_lh.html

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Your TFK Gardner does not apear in the index of Hart's 1885 Army List. I also checked under 'Kynnersley' to no avail.

I have the following, all Militia Battalions;

3rd and 4th Battalion (not specific which) Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regt.
23rd Aug 1884 Lt Thomas Frederick Kynnersley Gardner resigns his Commission

4th Battalion The King's Shropshire Light Infantry
Thomas Frederick Kynnersley Gardner to be Lt 25th Dec 1886

4th Battalion The King's Shropshire Light Infantry
Thomas Frederick Kynnersley Gardner resigns his Commission 4th Feb 1888

Hope this of help

Justin,

Thanks for that - odd that he is dishing out signed CDV's dated March 1885 in his DofW uniform.

I'll add some scans later in both his DofW & Lonsdale's Horse uniform.

If it helps at all in a biographical way:

By 1881 he was to be found in Folkestone, residing at 6 Shakespeare Terrace (an address affected but not too badly damaged by our earthquake of last Saturday) with his parents Thomas Kynnersley Gardner, a JP in Shropshire, and Fanny Melita, who was a native of Valetta, Malta. (It is not impossible that the family was merely taking rooms for the fashionable Folkestone "season" as there were other households in the same house, which is just off The Leas, but the first week of April was probably a bit early).

For what it's worth, the parents had formerly lived in Ebury St., Knightsbridge. TFK himself married in London in early 1887.

Peter,

Thanks for that, every little helps. Thomas Jnr., would also become a J.P. and a D.L. of Salop.

Bearing in mind what we were discussing in the pub on Monday. I paid more for a photograph of him, than I paid for Padre Smith's diary! The strange world of e-Bay!

Regards,

Is odd about him dishing up the CDV's, I guess he felt his resignation was only temporary. Maybe he went off to fight somewhere else? Might be worth checking out the Sudan rolls for example?

Would really like to see the pics. I have a medal to one of the other Officers in LH- also ex Militia

John, those are fantastic pics - thanks for putting them up.
The one with him in his Irregular uniform in particular is really interesting as I guess most British Officers in these units would have dressed in a similar way.

Justin,

Here's Lonsdale, himself, who has obviously set the style for his own unit.

Great stuff John! - have you more Irregular Officers! - my guy is Lt Bourchier who was ex 65th Foot - I guess this is more or less what he would have been wearing also.

Justin,

I would say so, Maori Browne is also wearing the same pattern patrol jacket in his 1879 dated photograph.

The only other one of this ilk, that I have, is Fred Festing of the Natal Native Pioneers. (I may have posted him previously, but I think he is worth a repeat appearance.)

Another fantastic pic John!

The style of breeches is interesting, each of your pics shows a stripe - I wonder if the same style was used by Officers in the same units or were breeches worn in previous British units..
