I trust I'll be forgiven the shout when I explain what I'm shouting about.
As no one else has yet mentioned it I will heartily reccommend the new Google books on-line feature. It contains a plethora of old works, easily searchable and completely downloadable free of charge (although best undertaken with a broadband connection). Just for an example see... http://books.google.com/books?q=zulu+war&btnG=Search+Books&as_brr=1 The first page alone is a wonder. To my mind it contains a must-read for anyone interested in the A-ZW - The Annual Register for 1879 edited by Edmund Burke. It encompasses a most thought provoking insight on how the entire A-ZW was viewed shortly after it was over. Other titles on that page alone include "History of the Zulu War and it's Origins" by Fances Colenso, "AmaZulu: The Zulus, Their Past History, Manners, Customs, and Language ..." by Jenkins (1882), "War Medals and how They Were Won" by Carter (1893), "Soldiers of the Victorian Age" by Low (1880) and that doesn't even scratch the surface, there are 861 returns on this search alone. Most of the stuff has been out of print for years but now we can all research it at our leisure. Absolutely amazing. Best Michael |

Right then, enthusiasm curbed (the CAPs bugged me!)
I recall a previous request for "The Soldier's Pocket-Book for Field Service" by Sir Garnet Joseph Wolseley. Here's the second edition - http://books.google.com/books?I'd=uVYBAAAAQAAJ&pg=PT14&dq=Wolseley&as_brr=1#PPT4,M1 As well as his "Field Pocket-Book For Auxiliary Forces". Here's the 1873 edition - http://books.google.com/books?I'd=RlcBAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA1&dq=Wolseley+auxiliary#PPP5,M1 Best Michael |
