Hi
The NAM will be showing ZULU in it's Art Gallery on Saturday 17th November. This will be followed by a talk by Sheldon Hall and book signing. Please see link for more information. We hoping to have a few re enactors etc providing the response is good to make it more into an event. http://shop.national-army-museum.ac.uk/s.nl/it.A/I'd.3923/.f |

The 35mm print would be fab!! Pity I didn't have a spare ZULU poster I could lend you for the event. They're all framed!! see you there.

It's a while since I have been to the NAM, but the Schiess VC was not on display. Is it back in the gallery?

If it makes any difference, I'd really like to see a 35mm print too... Paramount has a couple available for hire!

Hello Sheldon...since we're on film I just wanted to say that I've been reading Ebert's book on movies, the greats and then choosing the films to watch. Just wanted to know what yours are...I'm sure you have your favorites....OK Zulu is a given.....

Favourites? My top three are ZULU, BEN-HUR (1959 version) and EL CID. After that, things sort of get a bit difficult... but my top ten would certainly include MY DARLING CLEMENTINE, THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE and HAROLD AND MAUDE.

For the record - My top three movies of all time would be ZULU, THE GREAT ESCAPE, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY(BRANDO) Only 1 of which (ZULU) I have ever seen in the cinema. The best Caine film next to ZULU of mine would be SLEUTH, the best Baker film would be ROBBERY followed by NAVARONE.
- Numerous other films would be close fourth and fifth etc etc. I look forward to seeing ZULU again, especially a 35mm print, haven't watched it all the way through for 10 years plus. |

I saw a restored print of THE GREAT ESCAPE at the NFT (i.e., BFI South Bank), introduced by Lord Attenborough. And I've seen MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY two or three times in 70mm (Ultra Panavision, i.e., ultra-wide screen), once in the front room of a friend with a home cinema better equipped than most cinemas! The Brando version is much underrated, I've always thought; I prefer it to the 1935 Gable/Laughton version.

..thanks to all for chiming on the films!....I'm glad we all like films!
Yes, I was going to give "Clementine" a look/see..and "Ballad of Cable Hogue" now that's an interesting one! Going to check that one out! I see you guys can pick them... Navarone, Ben Hur, El Cid and Mutiny are all so special. I may spend some time revisiting them shortly. My all time favorite film is by Fred Zinneman..."A Man For All Seasons". I don't know. I never get tired watching it and hearing the dialogue is so good. When I went to your neck of the woods last year one of my stops just had to be Hampton Court! |

Funnily enough, I visited Hampton Court (again) at the weekend. And I love A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS too. Its opening sequence was filmed at HC.

Viewing the 35mm would certainly boost the numbers attending as I think most of us would relish the opportunity to see it in its original format.
Sheldon - It was mentioned on a recent radio show (subject of another forum discussion - Sheiss) that ZULU was to be re-released on DVD this September...... Do you or anyone know if there is any truth in this? ATB Carl |

If ZULU should be re -leased on DVD again, then please include the 'Making of' lost footage which Jay Pinto has, and was found in his garage!! Also too, would be nice to see a Michael Caine interview as well as
perhaps a few words from John Barry. The wish list goes on...... Other great films to mention, apart from the underrated Mutiny On The Bounty, would be THE ALAMO, again underrated. Also lets add CUSTER OF THE WEST, and BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. Newer films, AMADEUS, GOODFELLAS, CASINO. Lastly, the underrated OPERATION DAYBREAK, which, the screenplay is almost exact to that of the actual events. I'd love to be able to say ZULU DAWN, but - it seems a bit of a mixture of events, poor script, lacks the EPIC feel, and the music was very very poor. Seems to me like the film was 'rushed' and didn't have any finesse. |
