I was watching a "Civil War" canteen end on eBay (250191421546) tonight and was hoping someone could fill in a few details on the Oliver (AKA Italian) pattern waterbottle. The particular item offered appears to be a ringer for the MK II Waterbottle , Italian, 1882 pictured in "Soldiers' Accoutrements of the British Army" on page 15 excepting the wooden rather than metal stopper. Is anyone familiar with the Italian connection? I realize that the British adopted the regulation Italian waterbottle in 1874, but for how long was it regulation Italian issue before that time and did the Italian version ever have a wooden stopper? For that matter, did the British version ever have a wooden stopper? What are the chances of the eBay offering actually being of 1860's vintage? Was the Oliver informally used prior to 1874 by any units in the British army, particularly in the MK I form?
