,
My query this time round concerns the Rorke`s drift man, Pte Evan Jones OR as is often quoted, EVAN COSGROVE. Having seen his papers there is no mention as to the name COSGROVE .
On his marriage certificate it indicates his father as John Jones (deceased) One source indicates that his father was an Irish immigrant and little known about his mother. I have found a JOHN COSGROVE born in Limerick c 1824 who married TABITHA EVANS in Abergavenny in 1852, there were a number of children, 4 or possibly 5 in total, they lived at No 19 Armoury Row in Bedwelty EBBW VALE.
TABITHA was born in Nantyglo as were most of the children they had including EVAN COSGROVE. As is known EVAN JONES had a son born in 1902 called GILBERT so can i assume that he was LEGALLY known as JONES as opposed to COSGROVE?, what was the reason of his change of surname?, to enlist under an alias?, if so why no indication on his service papers?. I am not doubting it's the same person but am at a loss as to why the name COSGROVE does not appear anywhere on documents i have come across. I would be greatful for a definitive answer to this and extend my thanks to John Young for his in depth reply to my query on Lord Gifford VC.
Apologies to for the part messages sent, pressed the wrong button as usual, all have a good Bank Holiday, GRAHAM.
