I grew up with Zulu chants all around in everyday life, as workmen did tasks in unison, like lifting or pulling heavy weights with ropes and chains, or wielding pickaxes as they dug up the earth or the roads,

as they might do, advancing on the enemy in a battle,

led by the 'indunas', who would call, and the 'Urban Warriors' would respond.

It certainly made a lasting impression on a small boy.

Things got done slowly, (sometimes very slowly inbetween the periods of responsive 'activity'), but they did get done, and with conservation of effort. Very important in a hot and dusty environment.

We even had a Zulu war cry encouraging our school rugby team to great things,

aka a 'Haka', but by the spectators, with prefects as the 'Induna' cheerleaders.

Those interested in hearing authentic Zulu music and War Cries from the Shaka/AZW period might find this interesting.
Maybe the RRW Museum might like to sell some Zulu music CD's ???

EUCD1655 Shaka Zulu - Songs of King Shaka
King Shaka united the Zulus into a powerful nation. This CD presents songs from his time (1785-1828) as well as songs in his praise, war cries of the Zulu impi (army), hunting songs, celebration songs and other traditional songs from the times of the early Zulu kings. All sung a capella, sometimes accompanied by stamping, clapping, etc. The booklet gives extensive information about the history and music, as well as each song.

EUCD1567 AFRICA TODAY! - Best of Contemporary Zulu Folk Music

Today, in South Africa, the Zulus still fiercely maintain their identity at all levels. Zululand has its own king and governmental structure. Zulu folk singers sing of everyday folk issues. The five groups on this excellent CD have had great impact in Southern Africa. Zulu guitar, concertina and singing have all brought out unique approaches to music. Sit back and enjoy a colourful and joyful slice of Africa!
