I was given a copy of this picture with Pte 1061 John Jobbins in, he is in the first row third from the right.
Can anyone help with any info about this picture?

Could the photo be at Brecon Cathedral of the 1866 Colours? or Military Tattoo in Gateshead in 1934?

Others may be able to pinpoint it for you. I can tell you what it's not, which is a start at least. It's not Brecon. Dress is early 20th Century. Age of the men also confirms 20th Century phot.

Regards

Mike

Melanie,

It is very easy - a Comrades Reunion, but which one?

I will make a stab in the dark Whittington Barracks, Lichfield - 1928. As I have not been inside the barracks I cannot confirm this.

You can see the drums in the background are silver - 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers.

I could be wrong - other options:
Chatham 1910 or 1911, Devonport 1924-1927 and probably not
Portsmouth in 1930-1931 as these reunions hosted by 2 SWB.

Yes, definitely not Brecon. I'd guess at 1920s, going by the clothes and headgear - a mixture of flat caps, bowlers and trilbies. I wouldn't quite rule out 1934 ( my very first impression was c1930) but the more I look at it the more I waver towards an earlier date. I did not consider a pre-1914 date at all possible until a longer look at the chap far right (on end of 2nd row) and the perhaps slightly higher than expected number of bowlers.

Several chests sport quite a few medals, which would certainly suggest Pip, Squeak & Wilfred plus one or two others. On the other hand, a SAGS, Egypt, Khedive & pair of 2ABWs would also fill most chests - so is a pre-1914 date just possible?

Would I be right in guessing that few towns in south Wales, other than Cardiff, were likely to contain a group of buildings like that? Except Newport perhaps? Not Ravensworth Castle, Gateshead, either, by the look of it.

Martin may well know - probably does! Have you run it past the RRW at Brecon?

Hi Melanie

I have been into Whittington Barracks, Lichfield a few times and would agree with Martin it does fit, the chapel is just off shot (left).

Andy

A new suggestion: Could it be Bletchley Park?

Melanie,

IT IS ONE OF THE SWB REGIMENTAL REUNIONS. I am trying to confirm those that John Jobbins attended so that I cam locate both the place and date. The possible locations I have already given you.

You can try this site yourself:

Hi Martin

I can confirm that John Jobbins attended because this is one of my family photo's and it was taken by John's son Evan Jobbins.
