Crealock's Sketch of Rorke's Drift. |

Try the Sherwood Foresters Museum at Nottingham Castle, I believe much of Crealock's work in the collection there.
Given his injury I doubt very much if it would be Fred Hitch waving the flag though. John Y. |

Do you mean the sketches in IK's 'Nothing remains but to fight' pages 112 & 113? It gives the Sherwood Foresters Museum as source.

I have had the pleasure of studying the collection of Crealock drawings, held by the Sherwood Foresters, not now housed at Nottingham Castle, but at the Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell, Notts.
I was told by the officer who showed me the collection that they were now reluctant to grant viewings since certain writers had "abused the privilege!" He named one, but I won't repeat it! This was several years ago and things may have changed. The actual collection is most impressive - pity the Colonel didn't confine himself to sketching - sorry, cheap shot! |

The reason I asked this question is that I purchased what I belived to be a drawing by Crealock of Rorke's Drift at the Nottingham antiques fair.
The problem is that I saw the same picture in one of Ian Knight's books. So I'm starting to think mine is fake. It is signed by Crealock. However if it is fake its a very good one. Thanks for your replies so far. Peter |

Just to clarify what I posted earlier: the said author who "abused the privilege," was in no way connected to this Forum.

The Water Colour Drawings of John North bCrealock |

67 selected drawings are shown in THE ROAD TO ULUNDI edited and prepared by RA Brown Librarian, University of Natal published 1969 (limited edition 1000 copies)
The arrival at RD is sketch 27 and states the original was sent to ILN and is signed on the bottom left hand corner with notes on the left hand side and along the bottom. The Sherwood Forresters 45th regiment was stationed at Fort Napier Pietermaritzburg and Crealock, as a former commanding officer left a portfolio of 189 Cape or Natal drawings relating to the 1878-79. This raises a question in my mind, if the original was sent to ILN would they have retained it. |
