A friend has recently contacted myself and Bill Cainan concerning a recently discovered family descendant who participated in the Anglo-Zulu War. He's asked us, been more than a little interested in the subject (big understatement there!) if we could unearth any info about him.

His details are:
[b]728 Pte Thomas Spiller
F. Coy
2nd Bttn, 24th Foot

Apparantly he spent the 22nd January with Chelmsford at Mangeni but may have been part of the burial party that later buried the dead at Isandlwana. We've gleaned quite a lot of info allready, particularly from the Noble 24th but any extra help would be greatly appreciated.

What would help tremendously would be details of:
when and where he enlisted.
how long he served and when he was discharged
evidence that he may have served with the Mounted Infantry

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help, and kind regards.

If you or Bill are current at the AZWHS site (I appear to have expired) they have an article entitled "Thomas Spiller 1859-1906 Private 728, F Company, 2nd/24th Regiment Of Foot GONE FOR A SOLDIER in last December's issue of their journal.

Best

Just to let you know - his number is 25B/728 - issued in January 1876.

Thomas Spiller served in the 2nd Squadron Mounted Infantry until 12/9/1879 not with the 2nd Battalion

Thanks for your replies guys.

I actually have the AZWHS Journal before me as I speak - don't know how that one slipped by me! I will email the article to my friend, which I'm sure will give them lots to go on.

Much appreciated.
