Hi Coll
I have not seen the film, but have found this info: The Adventurers - 1950 | 86 mins | Adveture, Drama | B&W The Production Team Director: David MacDonald. Producer: Aubrey Baring and Maxwell Setton. Script: Robert Westerby. Cinematography: Oswald Morris. Film Editing: Vladimir Sagovsky. Art Direction: Edward Carrick. Sound Department: Gordon K. McCallum and C.C. Stevens. Original Music: Cedric Thorpe Davie. The Cast Jack Hawkins - Pieter Brandt Peter Hammond - Hendrik van Thaal Dennis Price - Clive Hunter Grgoire Aslan - Dominic Charles Paton - Barman Siobhan McKenna - Anne Hunter Bernard Lee - O'Connell Ronald Adam - Van Thaal Plot Synopsis Slow-moving turn-of-the-century adventure set in the stunning mountain ranges of South Africa, just after the Boer War, which could have been quite stirring if it hadn't been morbidly under-directed by David MacDonald. Jack Hawkins was on his way to major stardom and leads the film cast against type as a villain. Villainous commando Pieter Brandt (Jack Hawkins) enlists the help of a group of mismatched men to help him search the mountain ranges of South Africa for a cache of diamonds stolen during the Boer War. Joining Brandt is cashiered British officer Clive Hunter (Dennis Price), boyish looking Boer Hendrik van Thaal (Peter Hammond) and bartender Dominic (Grgoire Aslan). As their obvious distrust comes to the surface, the search for riches becomes a tense and deadly affair. |

I have seen it, but years ago. Its B&W I recall and I can remember them trekking about in an ox wagon. I fancy you might enjoy it. I think I did (though wouldn't swear to it afer all these years!) As ever Mike |

You'll see it uses the same location as Zulu.

As Stephen says, "The Adventurers" was shot in the Drakensberg a mere stone's throw away from the "Zulu" location site. In fact, Jack Hawkins stayed in the same hotel as he did 13 years later! It's not a great movie, but certainly worth seeing; however, C4's print seems to be several generations away from the original negative and looks rather dark and fuzzy.

Watched it and as you say Sheldon, some of it was quite dark.
Black-and-white movies can be dramatic, but in this, the spectacular African scenery is lost through lack of colour. The Colonial Ox-Wagon was accurate enough, but maybe they were still being made and used by some in the 1950s. Coll |
