I know Richard. He's a good hand -a thoroughly nice bloke. He helped me with accessing a lot of good primary stuff when I was preparing Into the Jaws of Death (and gets a grateful mention in the preface). I read through his draft chapter on Maiwand for him. The difference between his coverage and mine is that I wrote about the whole battle, but he is specifically interested in the 66th and not really the rest of the force. The book he tells me will focus very much on the 66th in Afghanistan. He is very knowledgeable so I would anticipate something well worth adding to the collection. I shall certainly be buying one. As ever Mike |

Thanks Mike
Sounds good. I'd like to know more about the 66th and Maiwand, much like knowng the 24th and Isandlwana/Rorke's Drift. Coll |

Would this Richard be the same person I talked to on the forum a while ago ? He was trying to track down the C.O.I. if I remember correctly. Coll |

I can't remember whether he's ever put in an appearance here or not, to be honest. I must be getting old. As ever Mike |

If you happen to acquire a copy in the next couple of months, could you please give a review here ? I apologise for asking yet another fellow enthusiast for his opinion on a book, but I'm presently at a standstill on book purchases. Thankyou Coll |

Coll,
I was in Town at the w/e (Army vrs Navy ruby at Twickenham - excellent Army win: 50 7!) and went into Foyles in Charing Cross Rd where I bought a copy of Maiwand by Richard J Stacpoole-Ryding. A well presented paperback, retailing at 19.99. Having looked through the work, it appears to be well researched, heavily illustrated and with a very comprehensive index. It draws heavily from the Regtl and National Archives with a number of useful annexes, incl nominal rolls, selected biographies of key personalities and details of some of the major memorials to the fallen. I would be so bold as to suggest that this is the definitive work on the battle. Produced in conjunction with the Rifles (Berkshire & Wiltshire) Regtl Museum, it seems to me to be a labour of love in the finest tradition of a low volume works produced to satisfy the authors passion for the subject. Not cheap, but well worth adding to ones library. AMB |
