I have recently acquired a 1st ed 3rd print of D.R Morris "The Washing of the Spears" (also have paperback - no photographs) where a photograph titled "signaling equipment of the 1st/24th Regiment at Helpmakaar" caught my attention.
Is this caption correct? If so, is there more detail?
Thanks
Paul

Paul,

No the caption is not correct.

The photograph is taken post-1881, hence the reason why the two N.C.O.'s are wearing jampot cuffs.

Look carefully at the box inside the tent with the helmet perched on top of it - part of the inscription reads 'Sergt. ... 1st Welch Regt.' The old 41st were in your neck of the woods in mid-1880's, there are a number of photographs of the unit in your area - a well-known one is that of their mounted infantry visiting Isandlwana.
