I was just wondering if anyone has purchased Prof. Laband's new book "Historical Dictionary of the Zulu Wars" and what they thought of it.
I see it's priced at around 100 dollars--is it worth getting rid of the moths in my wallet and forking out for it?

Robert

I don't have the book and I'm aware John Laband knows his stuff, but still a heck of a price is it not ?

Just my opinion, but over on this side of the Big Pond where a college student can expect to pay three or more hundred dollars per class per semester for required textbooks that aren't likely to ever be "cracked" again after graduation, any decent reference book at $100 is pretty much a steal-- Particularly one that will be looked at again and again. I'm not saying certainly that a C note isn't a big chunka ching, but this book is probably far more worthwhile than the combined six or so paperback fiction novels that would cost the same amount.

Barnes and Noble has it for $75 and if you're a member (annual $25 does save some money over a year if you buy books often) it's $67.50!

Thanks for that update. Right, I think for $75 it's a small entry fee to get the knowledge of arguably the leading academic scholar on the Anglo-Zulu War. Whatever you read is backed by work done through many years of research. I will pick it up for my AZW library.

Hi all

Just received my copy - excellent stuff, as you would expect from John Laband. My worry was that it would cover the same ground as Ian Knight's recent "Companion...". But not so, John's book covers 50 years of the Zulu Wars, whereas Ian's just concentrates purely on the AZW. John's book is "what it says on the tin" - a dictionary. Each topic gets a paragraph or two - ranging from "Accoutrements, African Levies" through to "Zungwini Mountain - Skirmishes 1879". So the two books complement each other very well. My suggestion would be to rip the covers off both books and glue them together as the ultimate reference book (sorry, Harold !). I suspect that both the books will ,in most circumstances, give the answers to the multitude of misc questions that crop up on this site.

A perfect birthday or Xmas present - or if neither are close enough for you, buy it yourself !

Bill
