That appears to be a family portrait-- a father and his four sons. Just a guess. The way you've phrased the question, Peter, leads me to believe that the future Field Marshal isn't necessarily the holder of the VC. Can anyone think of two brothers, one a Field Marshal and one a VC holder?

Stupid guess but what about Roberts and son.......but that would be one Field Marshal & two VCs.......and probably totally wrong for the ages of subjects & style of dress

Hint? Did he ever shoot his guide while hunting and have to get out of Canada in a hurry?

I can give you a hint - the photograph was taken in King William's Town. The future FM and future holder of the VC are separate people. Both served in AZW.

Hi Saw, think the dog looks more like a red setter than a herring..

Cheers

But there's still something fishy about the dog.

How about all five of the officers in the group?

Come on it is too easy!

Why be unkind to the senior officer's dog? He is just being a faithful servant.

Hi, my great grandad was once bitten by one, had to poke the ugly brute with a stick to get it off his leg. Went on to become a Field Marshal, which is not bad for a working class stick.
Maybe its a dog fish?
Cheers
