I am researching the Devon connections with the 1879 Anglo Zulu War.
Re the People, directly or indirectly involved, I am using Born, Died or Buried in Devon, to qualify as a Devon connection.
So far I have 14 direct participants - The "Big 3" are:

John Rouse Merriott Chard - Born Plymouth
Sir Redvers Buller - Born,Died & Buried Crediton
Sir Henry Hugh Clifford - Buried at Chudleigh (Just down the road at Ugbrooke from where I live)
I would appreciate any advice re how I can identify further Devon participants other than by hit & miss internet searches and AZW book reading ?

Thanks

SIR BCP

It's highly likely that most of the AZW participants who are buried in Devon (one of the criteria you follow) have been researched, logged and photographed by those three intrepid experts who have traced the last resting places of a very large number of those involved in the war, and whose efforts go under the name of the Keynsham Light Horse.

The trouble is, their superb website (which would assist you considerably) has been offline for a year or so and still appears to be so, and I'm unaware of the present KLH situation. Is anyone else?

I have not looked at 24th Regt. but Thomas Rainforth comes to mind.

Both Crealocks. Newdigate was Colonel Devonshire Regt.

Could be some 20-30 soldiers in the 24th with Devon connections.

Peter, Alec & Martin - Thanks for your prompt replies.

The other Devon names I had identified are:
Capt. Henry Willan (1st Dragoon Guards) Buried Bampton
Capt. Charles Harvey (71st at Eshowe defence) Buried Littleham. Exmouth
Corp Francis Attwood DCM (ASC at Rorke's Drift) Buried Efford. Plymouth
Pte Thomas Luddington (AHC at Rorke's Drift) BuriedWeston Mill.Plymouth
Trooper Henry Lugg (NMP at Rorke's Drift & carried despatch to Pietermaritzburg post Shihayo raid) Born Devon !
Capt. James Fencott James (13th Somerset Light - 2nd Snr Officer at Ulundi) Buried Ford Park. Plymouth.

The other non personnel connections I have are:
1.Dartmouth: Troopships called here to pick up mail en route to the Cape. And Wolseley departed from here to S.A for 2nd Invasion, after a train journey from Paddington (You may know that the railway ends at Kingswear, necessitating a short ferry trip across the Dart to the port of Dartmouth and it's Railway station building !)

2.North Devon Herald newspaper wherein comments attributable to Pte John Snook (13th Somerset Light) were published. These referred to the alleged massacre of Zulus post the success at Khambula.

Thanks for your help

Hi Graves 1879
Thanks for all that useful information.
You have done a great job there and I much appreciate the tremendous help you have given me on this aspect of my AZW Project.
I see that you also are Devon based, so if & when convenient to you, I would like to buy you a drink sometime as a thank you.

I note that there are two burials at Chudleigh Cemetery (just a mile away from my home) which I will go looking for this week.

I am also arranging to visit the Archives at Ugbrooke House re Sir Henry Hugh Clifford and to see his Memorial Plaque within St.Cyprian's Chapel at Ugbrooke.
The present Lord Clifford has expressed his interest in my project, so that will no doubt help me.

Thanks again for your help

Brian
