Do any of our toy soldier collectors know of, or have this copy from April 1995, that apparently has an article which gives details of a Colonel Durnford figure conversion ?

There are no details whether it was done by a company or private modeller.

Thanks

Hi Coll,

The article was by a gentleman name Rod Smith, I hope this of assistance.

I'm not aware of the Mike French figurine of Burt Lancaster from 'Zulu Dawn' mentioned in the article, whether it was sold in numbers from shops, or was another conversion.

I certainly have never seen French's figurine anywhere on the net, perhaps it was a one-off, privately made by the modeller.

Hi Coll,

Mike French Models was a one man company who specialised in personality figures (120 mm), based on characters from Zulu, Zulu Dawn and The Alamo. Please see below a few of the figures from my own collection based on Zulu and Zulu Dawn characters and a few historical ones from the same company.
And as John says the figures turn up on Ebay from time to time

Nicely painted figures. I would be interested to know your preferred medium for 120mm scale - acrylics, enamels, oils - or a mix perhaps?

Haydn,

When I did have the time to paint figures, I used a combination of oils and enamels. I bought some acrylics at Euro Militaire one year, but have not tried them out yet Crying or Very sad

Thank you. The largest scale I have done is 200mm but that was a Zulu bust and essentially an exercise in trying out my airbrush technique (didn't come out TOO bad!). Otherwise, I'm a 28 - 65mm man and while I have tried oils on the larger of those scales I tend to stick with acrylics. However, this thread got me thinking about doing a larger figure at some stage and the best medium to consider - hence my question. I guess I could throw the airbrush (Vallejo Modelair acrylic) into the mix as well ........ hmmm, more thought required but in the meantime, thanks again.

If anyone's interested, there's a Mike French figure on ebay now, the Henry Hook figure http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Private-Henry-Hook-Rorke's-Drift-120mm-RARE-/280514853830?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_ToysGames_ModelKits_ModelKits_JN&hash=item414ffcfbc6

I'd just like to make it clear I have no connection with the person selling this item!

I'd be more keen to know if the modeller who done the conversion in the magazine article has kept the Col. Durnford figure or sold it on.

Coll,

I know that Rod disposed of a lot of his Zulu War material a few years back, I haven't seen him since.
