That looks like an epic work. Sadly, at 110, I won't be buying. I think you are right and your publisher may rue ignoring your advice. Peter |

Well done, Harold! It's been a long haul and your tenacity is beyond belief (my belief anyways). Perhaps you could give us an entry or three, a snippet to show us what to expect?

Hear, hear! Congratulations, Harold, on the completion of what must have been a monumental project. The scope seems enormous and I suspect the limits to this were continually extended the longer the project developed - or did you have a set of categories fixed from the outset and stick to them?
A pity your efforts to convince the publishers to keep the price within the reach of the individual enthusiast fell on stony ground. I suppose this was always likely, with works of reference like this usually being priced according to the need for the publishers to recoup their initial outlay from institutions and see what happens after that. It may be, when the institutional take-up is more or less complete, that the price comes down, but we'll have to see. It's certainly a publication I shall want to acquire as soon as possible and which I shall find difficult to resist from the beginning! Peter |

New AZW Bibliography |

Gentlemen,
Many thanks indeed for your thoughtful and understanding messages. Let me first add that I was surprised to receive in the mail today my "author's copies" of the book, so it appears to have been published! It is a rather handsome volume, and seems easier to use and read than my 2008 British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography, largely because there is increased spacing between the entries. I developed a chapter outline at the beginnng of this project in 2007, which helped me focus on various subjects and smaller topics. This outline evolved slightly as the project progressed. I would recommend going to this book's page on Amazon.com ( http://www.amazon.com/Anglo-Zulu-War-1879-Selected-Bibliography/dp/0810872277/ref=sr_1_5?i.e.=UTF8&s=books&qid=1308342178&sr=8-5 ) and above the picture of the book's cover, click on "Click to Look Inside." This will give one the opportunity to check out some of the book's contents. Another possibility is to request a copy of this book from your local library via interlibrary loan, then photocopy as much as you like (since you will be using the copies for personal use and not profit-making purposes). Another good option may be to wait a few months and look for a gently used copy via Internet search engines such as Abebooks.com or ViaLibri. In the meantme, here is Huw Jones' kind and gracious Foreword to the book: "Foreword by Huw M. Jones Shermershill It is strange that the Anglo-Zulu War, which has been the subject of many books and articles in recent years, has never had a bibliography, whereas the Anglo-Boer War, which has been of far less interest, has several. In over 850 bibliographies listed in Reuben Musiker's South African Bibliography: A Survey of Bibliographies and Bibliographical Work (third edition, Mansell, 1996), there are only five bibliographies which have Zululand and the Zulu as their subject. Trevor Cope's The Zulu People: A Select Bibliography (Department of Bantu Languages, University of Natal, Durban, 1974) did include a section Zulu History: Cetshwayo and the Zulu War with just 20 entries. Now at last, however, we have a full bibliography with some 4,200 entries. In addition, this bibliography also contains detailed references to over 325 unpublished government and official documents, as well as over 1,200 unpublished personal and unofficial primary source documents (diaries, letters, accounts, photographs, etc.) located in archival repositories in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and elsewhere. Harold Raugh's Anglo-Zulu War, 1879: A Selected Bibliography is unique. Dr. Raugh has brought all his skills as a military historian, not least patience and perseverance, to focus on producing this extremely valuable bibliography. It is wide-ranging, covering not only the more obvious aspects of well-known encounters, but more specific topics such as Artillery, Logistics and Postal Operations. Dr. Raugh has also trawled deeply, picking up material from unlikely sources such as the South African Nursing Journal, Harmsworth Magazine, Vanity Fair and The Field. And he has not forgotten more recent media with the inclusion of websites and DVDs. The listing of dissertations and presentations is particularly useful. This will certainly be the definitive bibliography for many years to come. It will be indispensable for historians and writers on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and for students it is the perfect research tool with which to start comprehending its complexities. For those with less specialised interests, but nevertheless a fascination for this Victorian war, Dr. Raugh's bibliography will provide an opportunity to follow-up fascinating literary byways. In its comprehensive nature, the Anglo-Zulu War, 1879: A Selected Bibliography demonstrates that there was much more of significance to this war than the events of 22 January 1879. Of Dr. Raugh's many contributions to military history, this bibliography will certainly be among the most significant and important." Thank you. Cheers, Harold |

Harold:
Thanks for your "epic tome" on the AZW. I'm sure you're very happy to see all that published after all of your hard work putting it together. It is certainly a very valuable addition to AZW historiography. At this point, I've put it on my Amazon "wish list". For us here in the US, it looks as if the price is about $140. Perhaps I'll forego a couple of pints for the next few weeks, eh??? And I'm not surprised about the difficulty in reducing the retail price. The book publishing industry today is under great pricing pressure. They're really looking to hold up their profits in the face of reduced demand for books. |

Hi Rich,
Thank you very much for your kind message. I am glad this project is done, but chagrined the price is not lower to make the book more readily available to a larger audience. After all, that's why I put it together (the royalties are peanuts, too). Foregoing your pints for only a few weeks? Your dedication and sacrifice is tremendous! Here's an extract from the book's Acknowledgements; I reckon you'll see a few names you'll recognize: "A project of this magnitude could not have been compiled or completed alone, and I am pleased to be able to acknowledge the many people who have selflessly shared their expertise and knowledge of the Anglo-Zulu War and its sources and, recognizing the need for a volume of this nature, provided genuine and sustained encouragement over the period of three years it took to complete this volume. Many of these individuals are members of the Victorian Military Society or of the rorkesdriftvc.com online discussion forum, an especially rich field of information. I would like to acknowledge the superb assistance of the following individuals: Ms. Beverley Allen, Victorian Military Society, England Ms. Aileen Anderson, Assistant Museums Officer, and Mr. Barrie Duncan, Assistant Museums Officer, South Lanarkshire Council, Museums Service, Hamilton, England Mrs. Pauline Archer, Archive Assistant, Warwickshire County Record Office, Warwick, England Mr. Christopher Ash, South African Military History Society, Johannesburg, South Africa Major Andrew Banks, British Army Professor Ian F.W. A brave venture indeed, and one most likely to prosper as a searchable e-book on something like Kindle.
Which I suppose has already received consideration. G |

I'd like to echo Saw's comments. That's some list you have there! I'm trying to think now how I would handle myself at say an AZW cocktail party composed of those on the list. heh heh that bibliography of yours can come in handy if I memorize some of it.... ..Thanks..... |

Greetings Gentlemen,
Sorry I have been away the last few days. I greatly appreciate all your kind remarks, and my thanks again to all who assisted in this group project! There does seem to be a Kindle edition of this book for sale, although it is also too expensive! I'll look forward to hearing additional comments after some of you actually receive your copy of the book. Thanks again. All the best, Harold |
