A comment on the Durnford/24th Officer thread got me thinking about how many bodies were identified at Isandlwana. I did a quick search and don't think that we have ever put such a list together. And I mean positively identified, not just believed to be. I'll start to populate the list later unless it's already been done, with names and location.

Peter,
would that also include bodies recovered and buried elsewhere? I don't recall seeing that.

So long as the bodies have been identified - yes.

He is George Thompson Macleroy, roll number 47, a Trooper of the Natal Carbineers.

Trooper George Thompson MacLeroy.
Photograph reproduced from a private family collection.

George MacLeroy is actually buried in Pietermaritzburg, rather than under the cairn, his body was recovered by his friends and returned to his family.

What a brilliant start to this thread; a new (to me anyway) battlefield death location, a name, a unit and the rabbit out of the hat - a picture of the deceased.

Peter,

How about his medal; his pistol and a lock of his hair to go with the photograph? All still with the family.

Missed this thread of yours last week, Peter. Are you starting with some of the obvious ones, such as Anstey, Shepstone, Durnford etc? One or two colonials are supposed to have located their brothers on the 22/23rd, but these may not have been confirmed. Didn't Hamilton Browne claim he saw Pulleine? Unconfirmed category? One or two found their servants but I haven't dug around to remind me which ones. The March & May visits to the field added a few more.

Will try to find a moment in the next few days to add to the list, but others are bound to come up first with a few names at least.

Yes, I intend to include the obvious but the key point is positive identification and the place of death.

I would not include Pulleine for example because the location of his body - from memory - was vague.
