Those cunning Victorians had Photoshop a long time ago. I've seen it done in montages but never as bad as that. He's still ranked as a Captain there in the text. The real part of that photograph must have been taken post-21st December 1895 as William Weallens is serving in the Northamptons rather than the S.W.B.'s.

A photographer's name might reveal all.

Where may point to the photographer. Does the museum have anything on the original?

Going back to the initial Schiess thread, there is a sketch of him within the display dedicated to him at The Museum of The Swiss Abroad, in Geneva. There is a vague likeness to Hill, as I recall, got a photo of it somewhere, I'll try and find it. The display consists of a few bits and bobs, I went to the opening about three years ago.
