A thought: did the colonials (some of whom may have been familiar with the river's normal state) and the imperial troops all state that the river was flood?

As Paul has suggested earlier; some not knowing local conditions may have suggested a state of flood when the situation was 'normal'.

Only a thought!

That's true enough but if you saw something for the first time, would you say it was in flood
or just a fast-flowing deep river. In any event, we know that if it was as he described it,
it was in flood, as many of us have seen it in normal none-flood conditions.

I haven't read any of the Colonials' versions, so don't know about that.

Just a thought.
