ROAD TO ULUNDI revisted
The Zulu War Sketches of an Artist on the March:
John North Crealock
In 1964, a selection of the water colours was copied by the University of Natal Press and published in a book entitled The Road to Ulundi. South African Historian Ken Gillings spent 3 years identifying and photographing the sites depicted in the book and was impressed by their accuracy. The University of KwaZulu-Natal Press and the Managing Trustees of the Museum of the Mercian Regiment (of which the Sherwood Foresters was an antecedent Regiment) have kindly given 30 Degrees South the go ahead to republish the sketches, with the accompanying photographs and explanatory notes which were also prepared by Ken.
The result is a truly unique item of militaria, which is likely to become a sought after item of Africana.
The Foreword to the publication has been written by Brigadier Peter Dennis, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of the Mercian Regiment (WFR Collection), who writes:
It is a great pleasure for the Museum of the Mercian Regiment to be associated with Ken Gillings fascinating and detailed study, The Road to Ulundi Revisited, of the sketches made by John North Crealock during his time as military secretary to Lord Chelmsford.
Using his own photographs, meticulously matched to Crealocks sketches, the author takes us on a riveting chronological journey through South Africa, beginning in Durban in August 1878 and ending at Ulundi in July 1879.
Interspersed with anecdotes and monographs on the many personalities forever linked with the Zulu War, and whose likenesses Crealock captured so accurately on paper, this book brings fresh insight to the sketches and the places they depict, as they can be seen today in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Crealocks sketches were given to the Regimental Museum following his death in 1895 and form one of the most significant parts of our collection. We are delighted to see the sketches re-published in Mr Gillings book and hope that The Road to Ulundi Revisited will give a new generation the opportunity to enjoy and learn from the sketches.
