I have a real problem understanding Coghill's actions at the river in order to be awarded the VC. Yes, he turned back to assist Melvill, but his horse was shot almost immediately before he could actually do anything, Melvill making it to the bank himself. Melvill was held back by helping Coghill which allowed the Zulus either in pursuit or on the Natal side catch and kill them. If Coghill had kept riding and events still went the same way for Melvill at the river, they both most likely would have made it, though no likely VCs, as it was Melvill's duty to save the Colour anyway, the VC most likely for staying to help Coghill, so the latter got them both killed, so why award him a VC
