Just watching this film again, becoming more aware that this has similar aspects to ZULU, with Baker the officer having to make difficult choices in a remote outpost, having his conscience similarly tested by a chaplain who is also present, plus a war correspondent, who both choose to remain behind with his command.
It reminded me of how I wondered if a war correspondent like Norris-Newman had remained behind at Isandhlwana and survived the battle and/or was present at Rorkes Drift, again surviving. Being a reporter, his accounts and memoirs would have been eye-opening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX0SN2Ozyzs Bakers role in Yesterdays Enemy even seems to touch on the character he wouldve portrayed in Zulu Dawn - arm injury, running out of ammunition - even the Japanese officer mentions a bit of British military history, saying that they (British) are no longer fighting an enemy armed only with spears. I found these comparisons quite interesting |
