In my study of the Zulu War 1879, in relation to the commanding of the NNC and NNH, I read books and watched the films about the buffalo soldiers in the American West during the Civil and Indian wars, specifically their white officers like Col. Robert Gould Shaw who commanded Union infantry and Gen. Benjamin Grierson who commanded cavalry in the Indian wars.

In doing this I got to understand the trials and experiences of the officers and men of the buffalo soldiers (so named by the Indians) training and fighting together in conflict.

This was the first painting I ever saw both a buffalo soldier and Zulu warrior depicted, connecting both my studies.

I like it very much.

It is based in the Booth Western Art Museum.
