I understand the 1/24 was in Peshawar during most of 1855 and 1856, then presumably involved in the Mutiny in 1857, before moving between various Indian stations around 1858-60.

Can I just ask from any of those who know (or who have a copy of Glennie, Paton & Symons, which I don't yet) whether at any time between 1856 and 1859 - or especially 1857/58 - the 24th was stationed at Ferozepore, please?

Many thanks.

From Paton etc:

"In March (1858), the headquarters were moved from Umritzur to Ferozepore, where they were followed, a few days later, by a detachment left under Lt-Col Blachford at Umritzur, and in May by the depot and women and children from Rawul Pindi, in charge of Major Wodehouse."

That was quick! Very many thanks for this information, which is perfect for what I need. (It is very much an AZW-related investigation so I didn't enter it in the Off-Topic section).

I'm not sure why Paton/Glennie/Symons has eluded me so far, other than stiff competition from many other works!

Thanks again

Thanks for these Sean. Do you have any surnames? And I don't suppose you have any equivalent for the 43rd Foot (Monmouthshire LI) at the same time, do you?

Those are just Sweeneys, Peter.

Tell me what surname/s (and any specific christian names if applicable) you're looking for, and I'll see what I can find.

I have;
BROWN, Emily Bermuda 1873
SPENCER Annie M Madras 1878 both in the 43rd

I've only searched for and retained Browns, Spence and Sweeneys, I'm afraid.

cheers,
Sean

Many thanks Sean. Those surnames are not involved and I've since located the regimental moves I needed. Kew job now required, depending on other findings.

Your lot certainly got about. Like mine, alternating between the Jewel in the Crown & the veldt.
