I stumbled across this reference to Sgt Fred, (the Buffs 'Pontman' at RD) on a Wirksworth, Derbys history site, with a couple pics, which might be of interest to anyone on the forum who hasn't read Kristine Wheatley's latest offering;

For the uninitiated,
Kris Wheatley's latest book, Legacy - Heroes of Rorke's Drift - Volume 1 covers Sgt Fred's life in great detail,
as well as defenders;
Attwood; Gallagher; Hayden; Mabin; Miller; Tongue; Windridge; and Wood et al.

It's available from the RDVC Shop, and is well reviewed.

Pvt Caleb Wood was Kris's Gt Grandfather.
