I thought this may be a good topic for us to list web sites containing research resources.

I came across the following web site by Kevin Asplin (currently serving RA) that I thought might be of interest to many here. It's an excellent site that shows the internet can be a valuable resource when approached as a labour of love by individuals.

http://hometown.aol.co.uk/KevinAsplin/home.html

It contains info and links to :

Casualty Rolls of the South African Campaign of 1877-79 (Extracted from the work by Tavender and including colonial troops)
The Army Death Indexes 1901-1905 (including wives and children 'carried on the strength')
Index of Attestation papers of Colonial Solidiers who served in the Boer War (1899-1902),
The Medal Rolls of the China War of 1856-60
The Men of the Imperial Yeomanry, Lovats Scouts and Scottish Horse in the Boer War of 1899 to 1902
Roll of the Indian Mutiny (British Forces)
Nominal Rolls of Infantry Regiments in the Boer War in South Africa 1899-1902 (extracts)
Casualty Rolls of the Crimean War of 1854-56
Nominal Roll of the 15th Hussars in Bangalore, April 1845 (This was part of an experiment in producing electronic versions of the Muster and Pay lists (WO 12 series at the PRO)),
London Gazette entires for the 1898 Sudan campaign for the 30th of September 1898 (battle of Khartoum/Omdurman) and a copy of an article listing the men of the 21st Lancers who took part in the charge at that battle
Depot Rolls of the 34th Foot (Cumberland)
Boer War Shipping Lists
Nominal Roll of the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders during their period in Cairo from October 1883 to March 1884
Ongoing indexing of the men of the Royal Garrison Regiment
Some notes on the Bengal Unattached List, with an index of 200 men of the Punjab list in 1903
List of men whose service papers are included in the WO 97 Supplementary Series (WO 97/6323 to WO 97/6383) (These papers are among the few actually available on-line as they have been scanned.)

As well as many detailed biographies of individual soldiers. Most interestingly is a quote from his "about me" page - "I am an active researcher at the National Archives where I try to attend on a weekly basis - I can do research for anyone who wants a fast turn-around as long as you are willing to buy me a pint and pay some of the petrol!"

To me a pint and petrol seems much more enticing than paying a flat fee! (Although if I were to take him up on it it would end up more like a keg and a tanker!)

Best

I came across this voluminous link listing from the Warwick Names website (that goes well beyond just Warwick names) -

http://www.warwick-names.co.uk/links_central_directory_europe_united_kingdom_military.htm

It contains links to sites on UK location specific deaths, UK wide sites and battles and conflicts listing specific sites from the Battle of Falkirk to the present day (including this site of course and even one on the 'Cod War'!) some of the latter conflict links are to Wiki (which anyone of us can correct!), but still a great source anyway.

Another very extensive listing can be found at Genealogy World -

http://www.genealogyworld.net/ukaddr.html

[Most of these are not 'click links' and need to be copy and pasted (left-click,drag to highlight, right-click 'copy', left-click on browser URL bar, right-click paste).]

There is also of course the 'mother lode' -

http://www.cyndislist.com/miluk.htm

It contains too much information to even summarize.

I realise that many readers here are denied access to my primary source of period literature (Google Books) but I've found a British web site that does include some of the periodicals that have been referenced in this forum -

http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ilej/

For Nineteenth Century research in general -
