Is their book of the South African campaign still available to order or do you now have to order this from places such as abebooks.co.uk and amazon?

In addition to this has anyone bought the six volumes of the Archives of Zululand and is it value for money?

Thanks Graves.

Messrs Knight/Greaves' update certainly looks the cheapest option but I think I remember the reprint of the original in Foyles ten years ago or something and foolishly I never bought it. I think it contained photographs of all the officers did it not because I think that was the first time I ever saw a picture of Reggie Younghusband?

Do you have this update by any chance and what is your opinion on it?

Kind regards

I secured a 2nd hand copy of the reprint a few months ago from Maggs. It wasn't cheap though, around 90 quid.

As a narrative of the AZW it is very brief. But it does have excellent data on all the major players. The old Victorian style photos of the guys are something special, and to me are the highlight of the book. It really brought home to me the fact that AZW (Isandula in particular) is not only an academic study.

Well worth my 90quid for sure.

Regards

While useful for many matters, M & S is suspect, some of the names being incorrectly quoted, so take care if you are depending upon it.

Having checked a lot of names for my work on the Local General Orders, I came up with a number of errors, including the following:

1. Commandant Lonsdales forenames were Rupert la Trobe, but Mackinnon and Shadbolt give it wrongly, by initials, as R. de La T..
2. Captain H. Vaughan, R.A. This officers name is wrongly given as Vaughen in Mackinnon and Shadbolt but see Hart's Army List 1879.
3. Captain Eckersley of Eckersley's Horse. This name is shown as Eckerley in Mackinnon and Shadbolt.
4. Brevet-Major Chamberlin, 24th Foot; wrongly shown as Chamberlain in Mackinnon and Shadbolt; see Hart's Army List 1879.
