I know this is a basic question from a novice who took only high school Latin far too many years ago. Does anyone know what the translation of the Shako Plate inscription, HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, is?

Thanks,
John

Dear John,

It is the motto of the Most Noble of Order of the Garter (established in 1348). Not entirely Latin - but Norman French - but I stand to be corrected.
Translation?

Shame on him who thinks evil of it

or usually

Evil to him who thinks evil

perhaps you could try

Auspicium meliorus aevi

awarded to Colonel Redvers Buller VC after the AZW
