After just reading that a fire in 1973 wiped out a very high percentage of Army and Air Force personnel records from 1916 on to World War II here in the US, I was just thinking how you would feel if that occurred with UK military records. I'd think you'd be gutted. Genealogists and historians lost a treasure trove information here with that fire.

Dear Rich,

Your fears were realised in 1941 - the Germans downloaded incediary bombs on the store in Bermonsey, London holding the WW1 British soldiers papers - some 2/3rds out of 7 million records were destroyed.

We have just stopped the MoD pulping soldiers enlistment ledgers covering the period 1919-1946. Fortunately these ledgers have been distributed to the respective military museum.
