Google 'Reuters Africa, 24 Feb 2009', report timed 11.26 am, and subsequent reports thereafter; these give a tolerably good description with the exception of it being over. More of it today. Some hope, perhaps, for a calmer tomorrow, maybe, fingers crossed. Africa eh.... love her....hate her....love her....?!!

I've had a look at 'Durnford Rides Out' on ebay. It still looks great, but his facial features appear very different from the image you posted earlier on the forum. I can't see a really close up image, but it seems to have altered quite a bit, as I thought the one seen on here was more like him. However, I do realise it was a work in progress. Coll |

Coll,
if you click 'supersize' you may get a better look. Well I thought the final print was a better likeness after careful study of Durnfords features but thats just my opinion! Hope it hasn't spoiled it for you. You might be glad to to hear I'm going to have a shot at Custer soon, regards Simon |

No way has it spoiled it for me. I'm so very glad that a professional artist, like yourself, has considered him worthy enough, to paint, never mind the prospect of being framed and added to the wall of an admirer of him, such as myself. Custer ? I can't wait ! Can you give me any ideas of how you intend to portray him in a painting ? I'm assuming it'll be at the Little Bighorn ? He is so well-known. unlike the good Col. D., that many illustrations have been created over the years, covering just about every image you'd expect. Apart from...... Last stand, holding/firing his Remington Sporting rifle, or perhaps, in a more morbid tone, the moment he was hit with the fatal shot ! Your Good Health Coll PS. Have you given any more consideration to the 'Bowie At Bay' painting I suggested earlier ? |

Coll,
well it will be a last stand scene and will be as accurate as I can get it. I have just enjoyed watching 'Son of the morning Star' which seems to be the most realistic portrayal of the events I have seen. I also watched 'They Died with their Boots on', the Errol Flynn portrayal of Custer which was fun, as all Flynn films are, but hardly accurate! 'Fatal shot? could that have been fired by his own hand? He would not have let himself be taken alive that is certain, knowing what the indians would do.(sorry, just being needlessly controversial... )He will always be a hero and his bravery and that of his command is unquestioned which is why I have to paint him. Still back to Sgt Booth VC...... |

Son Of The Morning Star was a good portrayal of events. There was a drama/documentary on television not too long ago, as part of 3 programmes on the American West. One was about Custer and LBH, another about Billy The Kid, the last about Wyatt Earp and the O.K. Corral. The uniforms in the Custer episode, including of the man himself, as well as his last stand, are very good. Also includes him firing his rifle ! It is called 'The Wild West', and is on dvd, but only Region2. Coll |
