One of the nicest and knowledgeable blokes you could wish to meet.
Our condolences to Brenda and family from all of us here. I'm half way through re reading one of his books. (Isandlwana: The Revelation of a Disaster) Ron on the occasion of him buying me lunch at the Durban Yacht Club. Ron spent much of his life in Africa, including thirteen years in Kenya and Tanganyika. He served in the Mounted Troop of the Royal Military Police and the Rift Valley Troop of the Kenya Police. He is author of many works and articles on military history which have been published in the UK and USA. He was a registered guide to the Anglo-Zulu and Boer War battlefields. |

What incredibly sad news to hear, I really dont know what to say. however I can say this - because of Ron (and a Peter Quantrill) he opened my eyes to the path Ive taken in my AZW interest, and gave me encouragement enough through discussions here to follow it. A huge loss to us all

A very sad day.
One of my dearest memories of Africa is standing on Spion Kop as Ron detailed the events of the battle; 15 or so years ago: wow, how time flies! We first met through Paul Naish over 20 years ago when I was a young subbie on a lone patrol across Zululand. Good times! Ron was always good company and - with Brenda - a most generous host. RIP my friend. AMB |

One has to wonder, with the loss of Ron, who will continue to question events in the Anglo-Zulu War 1879 like he did ? I considered him one of the great seekers in the study of the campaign, especially Isandhlwana, searching for alternative answers to what has been accepted theories. Im sure he would want us all to keep questioning, as I know I will continue to do so
