Colonel,
Delighted to hear that the U-Boats have been thwarted and the icebergs avoided! I will await the February Convoys [hopefully via JW at BAR]. Having read both your previous two, it will be eagerly awaited. Yours in anticipation, AMB |

Well I must be lucky for hark! I am now starting to delve into the Victorian era mists which hide war.
Mike, if you picked the illustrations you've got a fine eye. I love stuff like that and i believe everybody herwe ill too. Certainly brings the era into high relief. (I recently saw a book on Timbuktu..not a pix in the book..what a waste of an opportunity to show the city and region!). Just some comments...I was a very surprised on how long it took for the British army prior to WWI to "study" war and all its sub-disciplines and apply a rigorous intellectual approach to how armies and soldiers should go out and practice it. As you pointed out there were reasons for this but it sure looks in hindsight as if the country and army paid the heavy price in WWI with its staggering loss of life. They were in bad shape if as you say the army had a history of Lt Generals not capable of handling divisions. And as we read about Isandhlwana and the behavior of the individuals and units on that day I'm intrigued as to how far Chelmsford's army understood the role of "individual initiative" together with close-order battle tactics during that time. If there was a change in approach especially in understanding the role of individual initiative" as a result of the American Civil War, it appears Chelmsford's army was one of the first prior to the 20th century that learned somewhat the balance that would be necessary among those two behaviors to fight more modern wars when up against an extremely mobile enemy. Disaster always concentrate the mind wonderfully. OK..one to more reading!...thank you Mike..... |

You're hired!! Glad you like the piccies - all indeed chosen by me but including contributions from the excellent Ron Sheeley (a countryman of yours) and our own equally helpful John Young. The one on the front, of Abu Klea, my publisher and I commissioned specially - in the sense that the old ILN picture of the fight has never been seen in colour before.[As you will know the real life jacket illustrations are different from the early marks shown on the internet.] Keep reading though. It's longer than it looks - it's more than half as big again than the first two books - so we used a smaller font in order to keep the productions costs down and bring it to market in the same bracket as LWOTF and so avoid a price-hike. I call it 'pocket-battleship' format!! Yours as ever Mike |

Thank goodness (and the postie) for that! I hope you enjoy it Clive.
For people who have ordered signed copies from the RRW Museum in Brecon I am going there tomorrow (Sunday) to sign them off, so I guess the excellent Celia will have them in the post to you within a day or two. For those within striking distance, the museum happens to be open on a Sunday because there's a militaria fair on in the town hall or the market - one of the two - they're within a 100 yards of each other in the town centre, so follow the signs and you can't go wrong - I don't know anything about the fair - just that there's one on. Regards Mike |
