Does anyone have any real idea as to why the full dress uniform of Lieutenant Nevill J.A. Coghill, V.C., on display at Brecon bears the rank insignia of a Captain?

I have theorized about this before in 'The Journal of the Anglo-Zulu War Research Society', but I wondered if anyone has found any other references, or clues?
