I am trying to also gain information on my great great grandfather ... the South African medal I have has a clasp of 1879, engraved 2081, Corpl. W. Ogborne, 1-24th Foot.
The claim I have heard was that he participated at Rorkes Drift, but I've been unable to subtantiate that. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Craig,
Well, to try and help you...here goes. There is a 'list' called "Roll of Defenders" on this site. This Roll was compiled from research undertaken by Julian Whybra and Norman Holme and is based on the Chard and Bourne Rolls.
The only name that I see on the list is this one:
Osborne, William. Private, 25B/1480, B Company.
Well, I hope that this may have helped you.

Craig,

I have in the last hour seen a copy of a handwritten document, in private collection, the author of which was Colonel Fanshawe Davies, of the Grenadier Guards, which relates to Sergeant William Ogborne.

It appears your great-great grandfather was one of the draft that Davies commanded as replacments for the shattered 1st Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment after Isandlwana.

He travelled on the ill-fated transport 'The Clyde' which ran aground off of Cape of Good Hope. One of the officers onboard that ship was Lieutenant Jahleel Brenton Carey of the 98th.

I hope that's of some use.
