Trooper George Mossop known as 'Chops'
had a horse called Warrior.
At the battle of Hlobane (post Rorke's Drift)
his horse was injured and somewhere I have seen a picture of Mossop with his horse's head in his lap.
Mossop went on to ride Warrior to Kambula where he died.
I would be grateful to anyone who can let me know where find this picture, or similar, and to give me permisison to use it.

For any information re Trooper George Mossop and his horse Warrior please contact me at this email address | 1st June 2002 | Julian Whybra When Mossop returned to camp after Hlobane his wounded horse died during the night (see Mossop's own account). I don't believe it would have been possible for a photograph to have been taken (let alone exist). Maybe you've seen a pictorial representation somewhere or possibly a photo of him with another horse. I've never seen one - but if you do find one, let me know (please). | 12th April 2005 | Mark Mossop I do have a book which was written by Gordon Button using the original notes of George Joseph Mossop - what George said was, "Such is youth! I awoke in the morning stiff and bruised, with a black eye and numerous bumps on my head, but otherwise quite well, and the stiffness soon wore off. The first thing I did was to run to the horse lines to see Warrior. I found him lying down, and thought he was dead, but he was alive, although very far gone. I lifted his head on my knee. He knew at once, and gave a pitiful whinny, shuddered twice, and died.(Hlobane). George born in Durban SA, he died on the 22nd May 1938 at the age of 77 years.
A great book and well worth a read, anyone intressted email me and I'll give you info on where to possibly obtain a copy of the book. |
