Date | Original Topic | 21st June 2002 | V.C. Medals By vernon vidamour Is it fact or fiction regarding what the rd vc medals are made from? I heard that they were made from a canon that was at rd! does anyone know if this is true? | Date | Replies | 21st June 2002 | Bill Power The story is the bronze of the VC originates from Russian guns captured during the Crimean War. Quiet fitting, as it produced the necessary reforms,as it was not a good day out for the Lads of Queen Vicky!! " Cannons to the Left of them,Cannons to the Right of them!! | 11th July 2002 | Brian Best In fact the guns captured at Sebastopol were of Chinese origin. These two guns, whose bronze was used to mint the Victoria Cross, now stand on the parade ground opposite the Officer's Mess at Woolwich. | 11th July 2002 | Martin Everett I quote John Tamplin - 'British Gallantry Awards' - the best book on gallantry awards!
'The medal is taken from guns captured from the Russians in the Crimean War although during and after the First World War it is fairly certain that metal from captured Chinese guns was used for a short period.' I'd thought I would keep the discussion going!! |
