Dear Clive,
The Sphinx was awarded to 2 Foot Guards and 29 Infantry regiments of Foot as a Battle Honour after the 1801 campaign in Egypt. Over the years different designs of the Sphinx have been used and this is still the case today. The 24th and South Wales Borderers have traditionally used a female version (although I have been told there is no such thing). At some stage - the officers retained the female version as collar badges, but the soldiers adopted a male version. In the 1950s a Quartermaster ordered white metal males sphinx collar to be worn by all ranks. The two different versions of the cllar badge are available from the on-line shop. Later in 1960s XXVI inside a wreath was adopted as the regimental collar badge. If you are really serious about getting to the bottom of this query then write to me and I have a 4 page acticle on the subject which contains all the different designs of sphinx used by the British Army over the years.
