Could anyone provide me with a description of the uniforms the Natal Carbineers wore at Isandhlwana?
I also wanted to make sure: the Carbineers were a regular British unit recruited from locals, not an irregular cavalry unit?

Thanks, Dylan

Dylan,

If you e-mail me outside of the forum, I can provide photographs and illustrations of the Natal Carbineers uniforms.

As to your query, the Natal Carbineers were a Natal Colonial volunteer unit - certainly not a 'regular British unit recruited from locals..'

Basic details of the other-ranks uniform; blue jacket with white collar, cuffs & shoulder cords. Blue breeches with a broad white stripe. White helmet with white metal badge & fittings. Undress pillbox hat - blue with a white broad band.

Dylan,
Im an ex-pat member of the Natal Carbineers now living in London. One of my hobbies is doing living history re-enactments and i'm a member of the 1879 Group. Although most of the Group wear the uniforms of the 24th Regiment, i have kept true to my colours and wear the uniforms of the Natal Carbineers of 1879. I have 2 uniforms, a Sergeant (my true rank) and an officer, based on Lt Scott who commanded the Carbineers at Isandhlwana. If you would like copies of photos - digital - of me in the uniforms, just send me an email and i'll send them to you. One proviso, the photos may not be published without my written permission.
