And it appears that the preperations for war were being draw up six months before the ultimatums were issued to Cetshwayo is this true or has this just came to light. |

19th December 2002 | Chris Evans "The Washing of the Spears" indicates that the boundary commission report delivered to Bartle Frere in July of 1878 set things in motion. He feared a native uprising in response to the pro-Zulu ruling, and in any case wished to annex the Zulu nation. The events leading to the ultimatum only provided the immediate causus belli.
