Date | Original Topic | 23rd December 2001 | Texan cattle and the Zulu War By Erich Wagner Years ago I read a source that stated Lord Chelmsford purchased cattle from Texas in order to have enough animals to launch his invasion of Zululand, and have been unable to verify it. Anyone have any knowledge of this if would be much appreciated? | Date | Replies | 24th December 2001 | Martin Everett Dear Erich,
There may be a mention of this in 'The Narrative of the Field Operations in connection with the Zulu War' which was published by the War Office in 1880. I do not have a copy of this book to hand, but someone may have (because it has been re-printed). However I will look it up when I am back at the SWB Museum after the holiday period. | 3rd January 2002 | John Young Erich,
The animals purchased from the United States were actually mules, for use as transport animals. I do have some details on the subject on file, if you wish.
